Martin Luther King : The Peaceful Warrior is the story of the great Martin Luther King Jr. Being the son of a shoe shop owner, Martin had a dream of being something that would help people but he would never imagine what that would lead him to. It was in college that Martin found his calling of being a preacher, fighting against the injustices that black people were going through. He became the new leader of the Civil Rights movement in the South but everything came at a cost for Martin. It all came to an end on a dark April 4th night in 1968 but his dream didn't die with him, it continues with his family and friends who push forward with his dreams!

I have always admired Martin Luther King, JR. for what he was trying to accomplish in a non-violent way. This is a great starting book for young kids to want to learn more about this heroic man and what he tried to do in his short life. It's books like this one that will make anyone want to go read or watch a show about the person which is a great thing to do! I have always wondered what Martin Luther King, JR. would have done if he have survived that awful night and what the world would be like now for it.

Thank You to Ed Clayton for writing this great children's book about a true American Hero!!

ABOUT THE BOOK!

Maude Julien’s childhood was defined by the iron grip of her father, who was convinced his daughter was destined for great deeds. His plan began when he adopted Maude’s mother and indoctrinated her with his esoteric ideals. Her mission was to give him a daughter as blonde as she was, and then to take charge of the child’s education. That child was Maude, on whom her father conducted his outrageous experiment—to raise the perfect ‘super-human’ being.

The three lived in an isolated mansion in northern France, where her father made her undergo endless horrifying endurance tests. Maude had to hold an electric fence without flinching. Her parents locked her in a cellar overnight and ordered her to sit still on a stool in the dark, contemplating death, while rats scurried around her feet.

How did this girl, with her loveless and lonely childhood, emerge so unscathed, so full of the empathy that was absent in her childhood? How did she manage to escape?

Maude was sustained by her love of nature and animals and her passion for literature. In writing this memoir, Maude Julien shows that it is possible to overcome severe trauma. She recounts her chilling and deeply moving story in a compelling and compassionate voice.

EXCERPT FROM COWBOY, IT’S COLD OUTSIDE

by Lori Wilde

Emma disappeared. Leaving Paige more determined than ever to please her new boss.
She marched over to monitor the side door at the exact moment a guy pushed his way in, bringing with him a bracing breath of cool December air.
She was just about to reroute the intruder when their eyes met. Crash. Bam. Wham.
Head-on collision.
They both stilled instantly. Gazes fused. Man. O. Man.
It felt as if the wand of fate had conjured him straight from a fairy tale about stalwart knights and fair damsels.
Snow dusted his thick ebony curls and his broad shoulders were clad in a faded denim jacket over a red plaid flannel shirt. He was average height, five- ten or-eleven, but he had a presence about him that made him seem much larger.
He was lean and narrow-hipped in a pair of well-worn Wranglers. Only the Patek Philippe watch at his left wrist and his handmade James Leddy cowboy boots said he was anything more than an ordinary cowboy.
But his smile!
Dazzling. White. Killer-diller.
Oh, that smile was a dangerous thing! Sprung from full, angular lips that twitched irresistibly as he stared at her—into her—with laser beam focus.
It was a dynamite, TNT, nitroglycerin kind of smile that detonated every nerve ending in Paige’s body. Rattling her foundation. Firing off round after round of tingly, breathtaking explosions.
Boom. Boom. Boom.
Euphoric devastation.
A surge of energy, a deep thrill that commenced in her belly, arced up through her heart and lungs, triggered a helpless smile of her own, and scrambled her nervous system. Tempting her to chase the feeling with a kite and key.
“Hello, Santa Baby.” The last word dripped off his lips like liquid sex and she forgot that she was supposed to say, Doors don’t open until one-thirty. Instead, her jaw dropped and her tongue welded   to the roof of her mouth, and she made a guttural sound. “Um . . . um . . .”
His smile deepened, moved up to crinkle around his heart-stoppingly gorgeous gray eyes. No doubt about it, he was accustomed to twisting up tongues.
He swaggered nearer, sauntering in an Old West gunslinger gait, the door closing behind him, the sound of his boots reverberating across the polished marble floor.
And still she did not tell him to leave, mainly because she couldn’t find her voice. It had gotten tangled in his lasso smile.
The way he moved, smooth and easy, slammed into her chest and kidnapped her breath. She couldn’t talk. Couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t think. She was a fish on a hook. Well and truly caught.
“I’m here for the performance,” he said.
Wait outside, she should have said, but her tongue remained glued to the roof of her mouth, peanut butter stuck.
Her first day on the job and she couldn’t complete one simple task—tell this red-hot stranger to wait outside with everyone else until the doors officially opened.
Clearly, he was not a man accustomed to following the rules. What applied to regular folk didn’t apply to Greek gods in cowboy clothing, did it?
C’mon. Snap out of it. Remember what happened the last time you went gaga over a guy?
“I’m sorry,” she said, meaning to sound firm, but somehow her words came out alarmingly shaky. “But we’ve got a strict schedule to keep and we’re not open to the public until one-thirty.”
“It’s eight minutes after  one.”  He turned his wrists so she could see the face of his expensive watch. Showoff. “Not that early.”
“Rules are rules.”
“Even in my case?” He gave her a look that said,
Are you kidding me right now? As if she should know who he was. As if he was somebody.
Cocky. He was amazing and he knew it.
His attitude rubbed her the wrong way. He wasn’t different than any of the other people lining up waiting to be let in. Peeved and vowing not to be swayed by his lively eyes and knowing grin, she pointed to the sidewalk. “Out, mister.”
“But—”
“No excuses.” “I’m—”
“Go.” She snapped her fingers, sent him her fiercest scowl, even though her knees were gelatin. He didn’t need to know that.
Instead of leaving, he strolled closer.
Paige’s heart skipped some beats. Now what?
The stranger studied her with half-lidded eyes and intense interest as if she were the most fascinating creature he’d ever seen. Her. Plain old Paige Mac- Gregor, the most ordinary girl, was being stared at as if she were the most extraordinary thing.

Excerpt from Up Near Dallas

By Gina Hooten Popp

Turning back toward the automobile, I watched Mick hang the gas hose up on the tank before sauntering into the station to find Bud. I drew in my breath. I bet Bud didn’t want anyone recognizing Mick, but it was too late to stop him now.
A bell rang at the school. I turned back to watch a tribe of children parade out into the schoolyard. Several teachers ushered them, telling them where to stand in front of a large, hand-painted school sign. A portly man came out too, with a camera held by a strap around his neck. One teacher was in charge of lining the kids by height, and she kept going up to the children and moving them around. Short ones in front. Tall ones in back. Occasionally she smoothed a cowlick or straightened a collar.
Doreen gave a little laugh behind me, and I nearly jumped out of my skin. “Oh, look at those children! Aren’t they darling?” We took in the chaos unfolding before us. “Look Margaret.” She produced a Camel from her purse and lit it. “Some of those kids don’t have shoes on their feet.”
I thought about telling her that’s the way my classmates looked too, but I didn’t. Instead I just stared at her perfect manicure as she held the cigarette so the wind wouldn’t blow the smoke in my face. Deep inside, I knew she had been just as poor as me at some point, even though she affected a fashionable persona. No sir, I’d bet my last dollar fine things hadn’t been a part of Doreen’s life for very long.
As if in a nightmare, the youngsters in the schoolyard all started to scream at once. The whitewashed walls of the school stood out behind them as they scurried in a frenzied mass toward the door. Bringing my hand up to shade my view, I saw one young girl covering her mouth and pointing behind where we were standing.
Doreen and I spun around. Bud was coming out of the store, waving a bag in one hand and a gun in the other. Mick trailed behind him.
Much to my unbelieving eyes, Mick had a gun, too.
It was Dr. Lyles’s gun. I remembered the doctor’s wife’s reluctance to let him take it.
Pop. Pop. Pop.
The flash of the camera made me turn around once again. The photographer was holding his camera to his face. Holding the camera high, he ducked behind a thick stand of bushes.
My mind whirled as I watched a teacher herd the last of the frightened children inside to safety. Her stricken face must have mirrored my own horror.
Whipping around, I found Mick and Bud holding their guns out at arms’ length—pointing them at each other.
It was clear by the look in Mick’s eyes that he intended to shoot Bud.
“If you’re going to kill me,” Bud said, “you’d better do it with the first bullet. I ain’t afraid of dying, and I ain’t afraid to kill you either.”
Mick didn’t waver, holding the gun level at Bud’s chest.
Bud moved forward and so did Mick. The barrels of their guns almost touched.
At this moment, Doreen screamed. Not just your ordinary scared-woman scream, but a piercing shriek like a seagull over the ocean —only ten times more mournful.
Mick lost his concentration for a second. That was all it took for Bud to flip Mick over on his back, without even dropping his bag of stolen money. Suddenly, he was holding the bag and Mick’s gun in one hand, while in his other hand he held his own gun. Poor Mick was sprawled in the gravel, staring helplessly at the double barrels aimed in his direction.
“Don’t carry a gun, boy, if you’re going to hesitate.” Bud nudged Mick with his foot. “Hesitation will get you killed.” He kicked a little harder this time. “Hear me, boy?”
My mouth, my legs, my arms were frozen. Beside me, Doreen took a deep breath. “Whatcha gonna do, Bud?” She walked closer to them as I stepped back. Her voice was soft and low. “You don’t want to go back inside over this boy, do you?”
Bud looked at Doreen for a moment, before turning back to Mick. “Get up!”
Mick got up.
Bud gestured with the barrel of his gun. “Walk out into that cotton field over yonder . . . just beyond the school.”
Mick did as he was told.
Somehow, I found my voice. “Please don’t kill him. Please don’t.”
“Margaret,” Bud spoke like a parent admonishing a small child. “I want you to get your mother’s butter-yellow sweater out of the back seat and go with Mick. The time has come for you two children to go home.”
