Centered on a community of immigrants who have traded their endangered lives as artists in China and Taiwan for the constant struggle of life at the poverty line in 1990s New York City, Zhang’s exhilarating collection examines the many ways that family and history can weigh us down and also lift us up. From the young woman coming to terms with her grandmother’s role in the Cultural Revolution to the daughter struggling to understand where her family ends and she begins, to the girl discovering the power of her body to inspire and destroy, these seven vibrant stories illuminate the complex and messy inner lives of girls struggling to define themselves. Fueled by Zhang’s singular voice and sly humor, this collection introduces Zhang as a bright and devastating force in literary fiction.

One morning, Deming Guo’s mother, an undocumented Chinese immigrant named Polly, goes to her job at the nail salon and never comes home. No one can find any trace of her.

With his mother gone, eleven-year-old Deming is left with no one to care for him. He is eventually adopted by two white college professors who move him from the Bronx to a small town upstate. They rename him Daniel Wilkinson in their efforts to make him over into their version of an “all-American boy.” But far away from all he’s ever known, Daniel struggles to reconcile his new life with his mother’s disappearance and the memories of the family and community he left behind.

Set in New York and China, The Leavers is a vivid and moving examination of borders and belonging. It’s the story of how one boy comes into his own when everything he’s loved has been taken away--and how a mother learns to live with the mistakes of her past.

This powerful debut is the winner of the 2016 PEN/Bellwether Prize for fiction, awarded by Barbara Kingsolver for a novel that addresses issues of social justice.

Who Are You When No One Is Watching?

When a beloved high schooler named Lucinda Hayes is found murdered, no one in her sleepy Colorado suburb is untouched—not the boy who loved her too much; not the girl who wanted her perfect life; not the officer assigned to investigate her murder. In the aftermath of the tragedy, these three indelible characters—Cameron, Jade, and Russ—must each confront their darkest secrets in an effort to find solace, the truth, or both.

In crystalline prose, Danya Kukafka offers a brilliant exploration of identity and of the razor-sharp line between love and obsession, between watching and seeing, between truth and memory. Compulsively readable and powerfully moving, Girl in Snow offers an unforgettable reading experience and introduces a singular new talent in Danya Kukafka.

ABOUT THE BOOK!

What if you were the only girl living in a boys’ military boarding school?

Fourteen-year-old Suzette LeBlanc moves into the Sanford Naval Academy in Florida when her dad becomes its new Commandant. Walking through the school lobby, she feels like something on a specimen slide in biology class. (It doesn’t help that she’s nearsighted and refuses to wear her ugly glasses.)
Suzette struggles to fit in with the older, more sophisticated midshipmen as well as the girls in the Catholic high school she attends across town. In between the pranks - from a riotous cast of characters - and the prom, she’s invited to join the cheer-leading squad and finds a friend in the squad captain, Debbie. Life looks good until a local girl becomes pregnant and a midshipman is believed to be responsible. That’s when Suzette turns to her parents to save the school from retribution.

Yes, You is all about how Reagan and Lincoln's parents from the Reed Brothers Series meet and fall in love. Madison is a rich girl who is fascinated with Bob, a bad boy that has a second chance after getting in trouble that involves Madison's Father. A simple motorcycle ride starts this journey for the both of them coming into their own and having a love that will last a lifetime.

This is a very quick read but it's full of romance and adventure. I never read this series before or any books by Tammy Falkner and now I want to read everything she has put out!! The only thing I didn't really like was the language they were using at each other toward the end of the book but overall it was pretty good!!

Thank You to Tammy Falkner for making me a reader of yours with this one novella!!

A Passion To Pursue is the second book in the Prophecy Of Love Series. Greer Maddox is a simple Texas girl who waited to inherit her legacy as a boot maker but that day never came and has since gone from project to project until a mysterious leather tooler waltzed into her life. Alejandro Villanueva aka Alex, comes from a checkered past but has a talent with leather that he hopes will give him and his distant family a better future.

Prophecy, Texas is the home of Prophecy Boot Company and Greer's supposed legacy until it was discovered that her brother's girlfriend, Delaney has the talent for boot making and the need to have a new leather worker. Alex is coming from Montana to secure a job and possibly getting back in good graces with his family, his car breaks down and Greer comes to his rescue right before an all important meeting with the company. As the two meet, sparks fly between the two and Greer sets up a contest to make Alex stay longer in town which doesn't really set well with Alex being so close to his hometown and his past.

As Greer and Alex gets close, his family shows up unexpectedly and with news that doesn't sit very well with Alex about who his younger brother is hanging out with, Alex finally tells Greer about his past. But when a rival shows up to try to win this contest and with Alex worried about his family, everything kinda falls apart for Alex. When Greer and her family discover that Alex left without telling anyone, it sends Greer on a mission to get Alex back in a bittersweet ending that nobody will see coming and a love that neither one of them expected!!

I never read the first book in this series but I fell instantly in love with Prophecy and all that inhabit this wonderful town. I'm definitely gonna have to go back and read the first book in this series just to get the back story on how Delaney came to town and changed everything. This book will have you rooting for Alex And Greer from the moment that they meet on the side of the road to Greer's mission to get him back to Prophecy! I also never read any of Kelsey's books before but I'm a total fan now and I can't wait to see what is to come in the future!

Thank You to Kelsey Brown for making me want to go read every book you have put out just to be totally caught up on all your fabulous work!!

As Maddie and Trent rediscover each other and find that maybe she doesn't have a curse on men just bad luck. It all leads to a bittersweet ending that everyone will love.

Even though I never read the first book in the series, it was easy to get into. I like how everyone in the book came together without being overly sappy and with a bittersweet ending that I truly loved.

One Texas Cowboy Too Many is the third book in the Burnt Boot, Texas series and it tells of how one woman is brave enough to change the rules of a town feud for love. Leah Brennan has always been the good girl in a family that has a long time feud with the Gallaghers. When Rhett O'Donnell shows up in town on his motorcycle and which his family is the neutral family around, everything is bound to change in this small town.

When Rhett shows up in town to help his family out with the town's bar and family ranch, a women named Leah catches his eye but she doesn't really want anything to with him until a surprise meeting at her secret spot changes everything. As Leah deals with her hard-headed grandmother, a few secrets come out about her past that makes her want to change things but a childhood crush on a Gallagher threatens everything with Rhett. It's not until both the Gallagher's and Leah's grandmother makes threats against Leah and Rhett, that they will make a decision that will change the town and to hopefully start the end of this feud!!

I really loved this book and even though I'm not big on reading a series out of order, everything just flows together just right so your not totally lost in what happened in the previous books! The only problem I really had with the book was the ending, it ended too quickly for what was going on with story-line. For me personally, any book that is a romance and set in Texas is a true winner in my book and now I need to go back to read the first books in this series just to get a better handle on the families and the feud! I am gonna have to warn you though, there is gonna be a point that you are just gonna laugh out loud for what these families are doing to each other!!

Thank You to Carolyn Brown for making me want to read more books by you and I can't wait to see what the next book in this series will hold!!

Good Sam is the story of what happens when you report a story that leads to something more than you can ever imagine! After covering stories like disasters and tragedy, Kate Bradley knows that the good in news is hard to find. When 10 people start to received bags with money in them, Kate is assigned to the story to find who is this elusive Good Sam. When Kate gets into a accident that lands her in the presence of a firefighter named Eric Hayes who is dealing with losing his brother in a tragic boating accident and with a ex named Jack who is up to no good, nothing will go right for Kate.

When Jack tells Kate he is the Good Sam, Kate doesn't know if she can trust him or not. With things not adding up with Jack's story and having Eric around telling his story of what happened that night his brother died. Things start clicking for Kate for who the money was giving to and who the real Good Sam is. It ends with two people finding each other during a near-tragedy and how a story of someone being a Good Sam can lead people to their one true happiness!

I just loved this story and what the one true message is throughout! I have to be honest, I read the second book in this little series (Perfectly Good Crime) first but now that I read this book, everything makes sense now about how Kate and Eric meet and why they are together. This book will get you to thinking about how just giving money to ten families will make a big change in their and your life. It was cool to think because in the story, they had copy-caters trying to replicate what this one person did, now wouldn't that be cool in real life if someone really did that!!

Thank You to Dete Meserve for getting me to thinking about how it takes just one good act to change a person's life for the better!!

The Trouble With Twins is the story of two twin girls named, Arabella and Henrietta who are identical but different in so many ways. Henrietta does something bad to Arabella while she is sleeping that gets her sent away to live with an Great-Aunt that nobody cares about anymore. As Arabella realizes what life is like without her other half, she sets out to go find her and discovers what it truly means to have a twin in a heart-warming ending that will bring everyone back together once again.

I found this book to be great in the sense that it might teach someone that family is everything no matter how bad or different they are from you. The parts that went back and forth from the story-teller to what the girls were doing, was perfect for this story and having that little background story fit in with what was going on at the time was kinda cool to have! I'm gonna put my two cents in and say that this book would be the perfect book to start a series about these two girls as they grow up and have the other characters be involved as well!

Thank You to Kathryn Siebel for writing such a great story that any age group will come to love!!

Where Are You Going, Baby Lincoln is the tale of when Baby Lincoln had enough of her older sister telling her what to do and she decided to take a trip. Baby Lincoln's older sister, Eugenia, loves to tell her younger sister what she can or can't do until Baby Lincoln leaves to take a journey on a train. Her journey is filled with surprises and with new friends until she reaches the end of the line and discovers that even though family can be a pain sometimes, they will be there for you in the end!

This was a quick read for me but I really liked it, I never heard of this series before but it is a really good series for younger kids. I thought the illustrations were pretty good for what the story was and the story-line could be used in a lesson to teach kids that even though you might be upset with someone, they will be there for you in the end. I haven't read a book by Kate DiCamillo in forever and found it to be what I loved as a kid, filled with fun and adventure!

Gertie's Leap To Greatness is the story of a young girl who wants to be the best she can be. Gertie is a fifth grader who lives with her great-aunt while her dad is working on a oil rig in the ocean. When she discovers that her non-existent mother is moving out of town, Gertie sets a plan in motion to be the best fifth grader out there to show her mother what she is leaving behind. Only one problem, a new girl who is set on making Gertie's life miserable. It all leads to an ending that Gertie didn't see coming in which it makes her see what true friendship and family is supposed to be like!

I really enjoyed reading this story and you can relate to what Gertie is going through. I could easily compare this book to being the next Junie B. Jones or even Judy Moody series, yes it's that good people! I do think some kids would be able to relate to Gertie and everything that has happened to her and maybe just maybe, make them want to be a Gertie as well for what she did in the end!

Thank You to Kate Beasley for writing a good story for kids that I so hope will continue in the future!

General Houston's Little Spy is the tale of how Texas came to win her Independence from Mexico. The year is 1835, Samantha & Danny are two young kids running away from Tennessee so they can get married and settle in the vast new territory of Texas. Shortly after getting married and getting settled on their own farm, the situation with Santa Anna is heating up that sends the both of them to the Alamo. After the Battle of the Alamo, Samantha is left on her own to fend for herself but she soon discovers that she can be a help in getting rid of Santa Anna by getting information about where he is gonna be next. It all leads up to a field at San Jacinto where everything falls into place and a new Republic forming called Texas!

I was born and raised in Texas and know that at a very early age we are taught Texas History and I could see this book being used in schools and libraries as another book in the teaching history of Texas. I did like that there was a whole new spin to the story that I read so often but it still gets the point across of what happened at the Alamo and San Jacinto. With the 180th anniversary of the Alamo coming up, this is the perfect time for any Texan to read this book and be grateful that those brave men fought for our state!

Thank You to Cara Skinner for writing a book about Texas History that will make anyone proud to be a Texan!

When Glass Shatters is the story of how a tragedy can bring a family together in ways they never expected. With the unexpected deaths of Lorraine's mother and step-father, present to be a challenge in telling her younger brother and step-sister of the news along with her estranged older step-brother, Noah. As the family tries to pick up the pieces, nothing will come easy for anyone. With Lorraine and Noah falling for each other, it takes secrets coming out about them for everyone to finally be the family that was made to be!

I wasn't so sure about this book at first due to the content of step-siblings falling in love in the face of tragedy with each other but it's so much more than that. You get the frustrations that everyone has to deal with when they lose their parents and then trying to come together once again to finally be happy with each other. It would be kinda interesting to have a continuation of this book come out like 5 years in the future just to see how everyone is doing and what they had accomplished!

Thank You to J.P. Grider for making me curious about what your other books are like from this one book!

It's the year 1906, Elizabeth aka Little-Beth is a eleven year old that has no fear and thinks she is the smartest thing out there but her family doesn't see like that and so they send her to her aunt Sally's house in San Francisco to make her a proper lady. While there, she meets a Mr. Steinberg who is sweet on her aunt Sally but Sally doesn't want anything to start between due to him being Jewish. Everything leads to the Great Earthquake of 1906 in San Francisco and Little-Beth forcing her to use her bravery to get through the quake and rubble to finally find her way home once again.

I really enjoyed reading this book that gives a whole new look at the Earthquake of 1906 did and how people came together for the most part. The part that bothered me the most was how Little-Beth's family sometimes treated her for her being herself but then during that time period, girls were expected to just sit down and be quiet. I do believe that this book will make kids want to go research the Earthquake and that is a great book to have on your shelves!

Thank You to Cindy Rankin for writing a story that will have all-age groups love due to the story and Little-Beth's spirit!!

The Twilight Wife is the story of a woman trying to regain her memory after an accident to find that not all is what it seems! 34 year old Marine Biologist Kyra Winthrop is left remembering nothing of her past life after a diving accident left her with a huge memory loss. As Kyra tries to remember what happened that day and the days before that, she soon discovers that not everything is what it seems. With a stunning conclusion that finds Kyra where she was meant to be all along!

This book was amazing in the sense that you have no clue to what is going on until the very last chapter when it will make sense about everything. My only problem in this entire book was how it ended without much of a backstory on how it went after Kyra discovered the truth to where she was in that last chapter but overall, it was a pretty good story to get in for a couple of hours! I so don't want to give much of anything away but this would make a fantastic movie that I would love to see being played out on the big screen that would be bigger than A Girl On A Train or at lest for me it would be!

Thank You to A.J. Banner for writing a story that will keep anyone glued to the book until the last word is read!

Badlands is the third and final book in the Laura Elliston series! Catherine aka Laura aka Helen has hit rock bottom with herself taking as a prisoner by Rosemond and Kindle being locked up in prison. As she figures out to make money while trying to escape, she hears devastating news about Kindle that makes her want to clear her name once and for all. Along the way to her freedom, she is reunited with a surprise that will make starting over fresh even better!

I don't want to reveal to much about this book but it did wrapped everything that has happened so far in this series up perfect! I did felt that some parts were a little boring but then not much was going on like the previous books that had action in just about every chapter. I did like how this book ended with everything coming full circle for everyone that made the last few pages just perfect! I think I said this before but this entire series needs to be on TV just to see everything play out!

Thank You to Melissa Lenhardt for writing a good ending to this really great series!!

Choices is the true story of a family's journey to freedom. It's 1950's Hungary, Kati and her husband Adolph are seeing history repeat itself and want more for their young family. Seeing a family members house ransacked made the decision for them to escape Hungary before something really bad happens. With their two young kids in tow, they have to make some hard decisions in their journey that will pave the way to freedom for this young family.

This was a really good book and even though it was written for kids, you still get the story without it being to rough for kids to understand what had happened. You can't help but to think of all the families that made a similar journey to freedom for what was going on during that time, it brings a smile to your face knowing that this family was one of the lucky ones! I thought having the pictures in the end was perfect and showing a reunion with one of the people that helped them escape was just icing on the cake!

Thank You to J.E. Laufer for sharing your family's story with the world so more people can understand what y'all had to endure to get to freedom!

All They Ever Wanted is the second book in the Second Chances series. Miles McAlister is a aspiring congressman hoping to represent his hometown of Chances Inlet, NC. When his mother has a accident that leaves her needing help, she asks him to help out with her Bed & Breakfast, so he moves back home and starts his campaign at the same but it's gonna be the B&B's cook named Lori that will change everything for Miles!

Lori has only been at the Bed & Breakfast for a short while due to her being on the run but when Miles moves in, she tries even harder to keep who she really is from him. As things start to heat up between Lori & Miles, items start to disappear from the B&B and nothing is going right until one night when all that Lori has been hiding from everybody will come out. With Lori's secret about who she truly is and a thief that nobody saw coming, will leave Miles & Lori glad for second chances!

I really loved this book and I'm not much for reading books out of order but this book was writing in a way that you could easily see what happened before and made it so easy to get into! As with Tracy's books, you come to love the characters in them and I had the thief figured out kinda halfway through but it was still kinda cute how they were discovered! I'm definitely gonna have to go back and read the first book in this series so everything can make more sense at what happened from the 1st to 2nd book and of course to be all caught up so when the third book comes out, I will know everything about this wonderful family!

Thank You to Tracy Solheim for writing this fantastic book and for making me want to stay up late at night just to finish this book in two days just to see what is gonna happen with Miles & Lori!

The Truth We Bury is the story of how an act of violence will bring people together or tear them apart. Lily Isley's life seems to be perfect with a rich husband, living in a ritzy gated part of Dallas and having a decorated Marine son named AJ. With AJ set to marry the love of his life Shea, it takes a murder of one of Shea's bridesmaids for everything to fall apart.

Dru Gallagher is the mother of Shea and doesn't care for AJ much due to him having PTSD. After running from a ex-husband that threatened both her and Shea with a gun and having PTSD, the look that AJ gets in his eyes reminds her of what she was running from and fears for Shea's life. With a killer on the loose and with Shea fighting for AJ, claiming he didn't murder the bridesmaid or do the things that the police are saying he did. It all comes down to a huge family secret and with someone that they never imagined to be in the middle of everything, for everyone to come together in the most unexpected way ever!

This book was a great thriller that kept me up way past my bedtime to only finished it after only 5 hours of sleep because I had to know who did it and how it was gonna all end!! As you start to get into this story, you start to question yourself on is AJ really the killer or is it someone else trying to set him up but how it all ended was kinda shocking but perfect for this story! I really love books like this one that the  Author will draw you into this world on the first page and will keep you thinking about the story long after you finish the book! This book truly deserves to be made into a movie just to see it all play out on the big screen!!

Thank You to Barbara Taylor Sissel for writing a great book that made me go to bed late and early to rise just to see how this book will end!!
