In The Lies We Tell, a thirteen year old girl named Martie is dealing with losing her dad to a heart attack, two young girls who went missing from a local mall and the news that President Nixon has lied to the country. It's 1974, Martie's mother makes the decision to move quickly to Michigan after Martie's dad dies, taking Martie and her sister away from everything they ever known in Maryland. But as Martie soon discovers that nothing is the same and a major secret may be hiding behind closed doors.
Once they arrived in their new state and new house, Martie starts calling her old house in Maryland and talks with a young girl who lives there now that knows something that happened with her dad that Martie doesn't want to believe. With her sister going crazy that she can't be with her boyfriend, she starts hanging around a local artist that everyone calls a witch. After her sister runs away to win her boyfriend back and with her mother gone on a trip, Martie discovers the truth about a secret that both her mother and sister were hiding from her and it will change everything with this family.
I liked this book but thought it could have been a little bit longer but overall it was a very good read. Reading books that are set in a past decade just makes you think about how much simpler life was back then even though you can still have major family drama which is something that will never change. Even though this is my first book by Jamie, I'm looking forward to seeing what is to come from her!!
Thank You to Jamie Holland for writing a story that brings you back in time and a clue to what is to come from you in the future!!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley!
